Posts are becoming few and far between…

Thursday, October 2nd, 2003

Sorry about the lack of posts lately. I am really beginning to feel the strains of law school right now. We were just assigned our open memorandum today and I have a property midterm on Monday. I guess it is safe to safe that I won’t be doing much of anything this weekend outside the realm of property. All this and not to mention, I have a cold. I guess the late night study sessions are a bit too much on the ole body now.

Nevertheless, I am really enjoying law school. The knowledge we digest everyday is awesome. I only hope I will be able to retain the information technology well beyond my three years here. I have so many topics I would like to right about but I feel extremely guilty for spending time away from the books. I think I will use this site as an outlet from the books.

One topic I would like to comment on is the obvious preying upon a 1L’s psyche in regards to study aids, bar review courses, memberships. It seems to me every time I turn around, someone is trying to sell us something to be more successful in school…$100.00 here a $100.00 there. I am convinced that there is a “dominant-subordinate” relationship going on here. I will invalidate this with Second Restatement of Contracts 79 comment e. : ) Sorry, I am such a contract’s geek.

Okay, time to get on with the studies…

Some Time To Reflect…

Sunday, September 21st, 2003

It’s Saturday night…I know it’s been awhile since my last post but hey I have been busy. With 3 grey goose and tonics behind me it is time to reflect. This past week and a half has been pretty busy. 1Ls were giving an “closed memo” assignment. The memo took about 4 times the amount of time I originally had scheduled. The issue had a controversial outcome. My study group debated a few hours as to what recovery if any at all the plaintiff should get. The lessons I learned regarding this memo is, get started early, revise a billion times, and hope that you get it right in the end.
Other lessons: relax. A great lawyer will be one that can handle the pressures of the court, the clients, and those time consuming memos, briefs, etc… This is a lesson I am going to have to ease my way into. I know I am a bit high strung right now, focused is an understatement but I am here at Washburn to take it all in. I want to be able to walk into a courtroom able to see the landscape…and know what tools in my arsenal I have to use…Grades aren’t everything…but Knowledge is…Tests are subjective but so is life. I hope I will make grades…but more importantly I hope I have the knowledge to be a great attorney.

Status update: School is going okay…I have been right on with the readings, memo, and assignments. I have a couple of weeks before my first mid-term exam. Torts and Property are lingering in the future.

Well, thanks for staying in tune with Mac Justice…more will be coming this week as I regain my mind and time.

Time Goes On…

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2003

This week has been fairly quiet thus far. I have a had a fairly decent opportunity to catch up on some reading this week. I wasn’t as diligent as I wanted to be this weekend.Lesson 1: life does exist outside of law school. This weekend my brother and his girlfriend came up this weekend. We had a great time but as you can imagine I really didn’t hit the books until late Monday afternoon. Upon reflection, sometimes you have to make sacrifices and CHOICES. That is what life is all about. I love studying the law and I want to soak up as much as possible in these short three years. However, without family and friends, the time commitment I have decided to give on this endeavor wouldn’t be quite as important.

For the first time, I truly believe that I am here to study for the inherent understanding of the law. No instrumental reasons; I am not too concerned about the big money that awaits on the horizon. Right now, I want to just fill that void of knowledge concerning the law.

Okay, I guess I have rambled on long enough. Time to prepare-contracts is only 6 hour away. I think I am paranoid now about being called out.
